Navjot Sidhu seeks stringent law for violence against journalists

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Local bodies, culture and tourism minister Navjot Singh Sidhu today advocated strong law for violence against journalists and said that attacks on media persons are most unfortunate.

Addressing 'Meet the Press' programme here at Chandigarh Press Club Navjot Sidhu said that freedom of press was necessary so that society lives without fear. He said that Press was only institution which can check the corruption and give direction to society. He said that he was very upset when he recently saw crowd hitting media persons and burning theit vehicles in Panchkula (9during dera head hearing in court), He said that a separate law was needed to tackle the attacks on media persons.

Sidhu said that he would take up the matter with Chief Minister and discuss in the cabinet for legal protection of media persons,.Hhe said that media shall work without any fear.

Taking dig at SAD leader Sucha Singh Langah who is caught in sex racket, Sidhu said that sex video of Langah was testimony of character of Akali leaders. He said that one could only laugh after seeing the sex video of Langah. He said that even BJP candidate from Gurdaspur faces rape case. Langah was election incharge of Gurdeaspur Lok Sabha seat from where Salaria is contesting.

Sidhu said that Punjab Chief Minister was committed for wiaving loans of farmers and entire cabinet wanted to give relief to farmers who are committing suicides. He said that unfortunatly for the last twenty years, focus is to waive of debt and no steps were taken to create circumstances where farmers are not forced to take loans. He said that Capt Government was working in this direction. He said that Chief Minister will make annoucement after October 15, after Gurdaspur election is over.

Replying to questions Sidhu said that Punjab has great tourism potnetial and he would make tourism engine fo Punjab's economy in three years. He said that he had prepared tourism and culture policy and will unveil after October 15. He said that Punjab has rich cultural heritage and we will market it in proper way. He said that Switerzland earns 60 percent of its revenue from tourism. He said that 1,25 lakh tourists visit Amritsar Golden Temple every month and if state gets 50,000 tourists to stay for a night in Punjabm it will boost economy.

Sidhu said that Badal family had looted Punjab recklessly and nothing is done to promote rourism and culture. He said that they ruined the public transport system that si why PRTC is in loss for Rs.700 crores and Haryana roadways is in profit of Rs.1700 crores. he said that transport companies of Badal family folurished in last ten years. He said that he wanted to see Badals behind bars but Chief Minister is against politics of vendetta.
