New Delhi: The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday announced Swaran Salaria as its party candidate for the upcoming Gurdaspur Lok Sabha bypoll.

The bypoll will witness a triangular contest among BJP, Congress and AAP. The Congress has already announced the name of Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar for the bypoll, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fielded Major General Suresh Khajuria (Retd) as its candidate.

Salaria, a Mumbai-based business tycoon, hails from Chauhana village in Gurdaspur. He is a member of the BJP’s national executive and an ex- chairman of the Punjab state commission for protection of child rights.

The Gurdaspur bypoll necessitated following the death of BJP MP Vinod Khanna. The bypoll has been scheduled for October 11 and results will be declared on October 15.

The bypoll will witness a triangular contest among BJP, Congress and AAP.

The Congress has already announced the name of Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar for the bypoll, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fielded Major General Suresh Khajuria (Retd) as its candidate.
