Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh): Natho Begum, a woman in her early forties, saw her teenaged daughters happy the last time on August 10 night just before Fiza and her elder sister Gulshan went off to sleep on the same cot in a small two-room house in an abandoned corner of Devraniya Jagir village in Bareilly.

“Our probe shows that Yusuf was repeatedly stalking and harassing Fiza, trying to forcing her into a relationship with him. Fiza kept on rejecting his attempts. The jilted lover then hatched a plan in which her other stalker, Vijaypal, also took part,” Senior Superintendent of Police Jogendra Kumar told the media while announcing the arrest of the two main accused.

While Begum was sleeping with her husband Naseeruddin that night, in the adjacent room, Yusuf and Vijaypal Gangwar, two youths of the same village who had been stalking Fiza for the past several months, poured petrol on the teenagers’ cot and set it afire.

Before the two sisters could jump out, the plastic mosquito net around the cot turned into an inferno, critically injuring the two sisters. Though Gulshan, who suffered 95% burns, and Fiza, with more than 75% burns, were admitted to the burns ward of the district hospital in Bareilly, Gulshan succumbed to her injuries the next day.

Fiza, who was later referred to King George Medical College in Lucknow, died on Tuesday. While the Bareilly police claim to have cracked the case, the family is yet to recover from the shock.

Hours after he buried Fiza on Tuesday, Naseeruddin sat in a corner of his house and muttered to himself if the presence of a door in the room where the two sisters were sleeping and a higher boundary wall could have saved his daughters. He could not get a door fixed or raise the boundary wall, which Fiza’s stalkers easily scaled and entered the house, because he had no money. As a landless labourer, he could barely make ends meet.

According to the police, who have arrested both Yusuf and Vijaypal, Fiza had consistently been refusing their advances for the last several months.

Every time the Class IX student walked to her school in adjacent Chamraua village, the two youths would confront her to accept their proposal.

“Yusuf's plan was not to kill her but probably intimidate or scare her by putting a fire near her. Actually, he wanted to seek Fiza’s sympathy by helping her in dealing with the aftermath of the fire. But it all went horribly wrong,” said Mr. Kumar, adding that the theory has failed to convince the parents of the girls.
