33 hospitals in Punjab found violating green norms

Chandigarh (PKB), July 19: The Punjab Pollution Control Board today caught 33 hospitals violating the pollution norms during surprise raids all over the state. Strict action has been initiated against these erring hospitals violating the guidelines and spreading pollution.

PPCB Chairman Mr. KS Pannu said that board would follow the policy of zero tolerance with regard to bio-medical waste as it has potential for spreading deadly diseases. He appealed to the medical professionals to follow the stipulated procedure for the disposal of bio-medical waste. “The engineers of PPCB have been directed to keep a constant watch on the hospitals for ensuring proper disposal of bio-medical waste,” he said.

The Chairman said that PPCB constituted scores of  teams headed by its environment engineers to inspect the hospitals.

Pannu said bio-medical waste is a major environmental irritant that requires special handling and management.

He said, “PPCB has already given detailed guidelines to the hospitals for handling and management of bio-medical waste which is collected by specialized agencies authorized by the Board. About 14 tonnes of bio-medical waste is being collected daily by specialized agencies whose vehicles have been fitted with centrally controlled GPS systems.”

It is pertinent to mention here that there are about 10,000 hospitals in the state including the government hospitals.
