Speeding SUV mauls man from Canada

Chandigarh: A 26-year-old man suspected to be drunk rammed his speeding SUV into a scooter and two cars on the road dividing sec tors 16 and 17 on Friday morning, killing a person who had returned from Canada two months back and injuring another.

T he Toyota For tuner driver, Satyajot, a resident of Sector 70, Mohali, was coming from Matka Chowk.The SUV hit two men on a scooter from the rear, hurtled on to the opposite side of the road after breaking an iron grille and crashed into two cars, a Hyundai Verna and a Maruti Swift Dzire. Both car occupants escaped unhurt.

Police got information about the accident around 9.45 am. Police said Satyajot was reeking of alcohol but his medical examination report is awaited. Satyajot helps his father in his real estate business. He was arrested but was later released on bail.

Gyan Masih, 55, and Madan Lal, both residents of Sector 41, were on the scooter. Madan Lal was riding pillion. Police rushed them to Government Multispecialty Hospital, Sector 16. The two were referred to PGI, where doctors declared Gyan Masih brought dead. Masih's son Vikas said his father was going to Sector 17 and had returned f r o m C a n a d a j u s t t wo months back.

M a s i h w o rk e d a s a whitewash contractor. Vikas said his younger broth er had died in a road accident six years back. Masih is survived by his wife and three children.

Police said the SUV driv er was at a very high speed and had lost control over the steering wheel.

The police registered a case under sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304 A (causing death due to negligence) at the Sector 17 police station.
