New Delhi: Two days after declaring that she won't have a negative approach towards NDA's nominee for the presidential election, Ram Nath Kovind, as he is Dalit, BSP chief Mayawati changed her stand on Thursday , openly backing UPA's nominee for the poll.

Just two days ago, BSP had backed Kovind. “We will not have a negative approach towards him primarily because he is Dalit, and will support him,“ Mayawati had said, adding, “Unless the opposition parties put up a Dalit candidate who is more popular.“ She had also pointed out that she didn't approve of Kovind's political background “as he has been mainly associated with BJP and RSS“.

“Meira Kumar is more capable and popular than the NDA candidate,“ she said. Mayawati said Kovind had been associated with the “narrow ideologies“ of BJP and RSS “right from the beginning“.“Hence, I do not subscribe to his political background,“ she said in a statement.

The statement said that, in the “new circumstances“, after comparing the qualities of the two candidates, “it is clear that the UPA candidate is more capable and popular than the NDA nominee“. “Hence, our party declares support to Meira Kumar for the presidential poll,“ Mayawati said.
