Punjab appoints Ombudsman for NRI Affairs

Chandigarh: The state government has proposed to set up an ombudsman solely for NRIs. “A lot of NRIs face problems either related to their property or other matters.They come to the state only for a short period every year and cannot afford spending long time dealing with legal problems. With the objective to redress their grievances ef fectively in a time-bound manner, the state is bringing a new legislation to create an Ombudsman for NRI Affairs,“ the budget proposal states.

“The government proposes to enact `NRI Property Safeguards Act' for protecting the property of NRIs for easy and quick delivery of justice in the state,“ added Badal.

To further connect with Punjabi NRIs, the state government has unveiled “Friends of Punjab-Chief Minister's Garima Gram Yojna“ for the Diaspora. “Under this scheme, NRIs would be encou raged to connect with their villages. Adequate support would be provided for implementing this scheme during the year,“ said finance minister Manpreet Badal.

The budget also sought to involve the NRIs in its Padho Punjab Padhao Punjab scheme, as it said that it was time Punjabis settled abroad can be “engaged to go back to their villages and contribute in a big way.“
