At 98.1%, the overall passing ratio remained changed from last year for the Panchkula region - comprising Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Chandigarh - in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class-10 examination, the results of which were declared on Saturday. The ratio is better than the national average of 90.95%.

Also, while in the all-India results the boys were ahead, in the Panchkula region, the more usual trend of girls outperforming boys was evident again. As per data released by the regional office in Panchkula, girls have a pass percentage of 98.77, and boys have 97.68. In 2014, the performance of the region was 99.49%; it slumped to 97.9% in 2015, and increased marginally to 98.1% in 2016.

The region's overall figure indeed comes down to 94.34%, if 834 private candidates are included too. But historically the CBSE does not include them. Joseph Emmanuel, the regional director of CBSE, confirmed that the pass percentage (98.1 now, and also figures for the previous years) is based on the performance of the regular students. He said the overall result is satisfactory.

Despite performing better than the national average, Panchkula region is not in the top three regions. It is at the fourth spot after Trivandrum (99.85%) followed by Chennai at 99.62% and Allahabad at 98.23%. The CBSE has a total of 10 regions. Earlier, large number of students and school authorities remained anxious for hours as school-wise results were delayed for the Panchkula region.

Result of other regions -- Delhi (78.09 %), Allahabad (98.23 %), Chennai (99.62 %), Dehradun (97.27 %) and Trivandrum (99.85 %) -- were out by 12 pm.

A Panchkula based parent Anuradha Aggarwal said that it was highly unprofessional on the part of the board that it kept the students and schools on its toes since morning. It should have released the result of all the regions in one go as it did for Class 12.
