Chandigarh: Jama Masjid Sector 20 witnessed a huge rush on last Friday before the beginning of the fasting month of Ramzan. This year the members of the community will have to fast for more than 15 hours during the month.

According to the time table released and circulated by the Jama Masjid on Friday, first day of the fasting will be from Sunday. Members of the community will have to take meals before 3.46 am in morning and break fast at 7.17 pm. The duration of the fast on rest of the days will vary by one minute.

Dr Shakeel Ahmed, retired professor from Urdu department Panjab University (PU) said, "This time, Ramzan fasting will be a difficult task as the days are hot as well as long. He added, Ramzan is not only about abstaining from food or drink but also the time of deep contemplation when maximum forgiveness is sought from Allah.

According to beliefs, Ramzan, the ninth month of Islamic calendar, and is observed as month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad. The month lasts 29-30 days based on the visual sighting of the moon.

During the month the number of prayers offered to Allah also increases. Devotees observing the fast eat only two meals each day, one before breaking of dawn (Sehri) and another after sunset (Iftar).

Echoing a similar opinion, Imam of Jama Masjid Ajmal Khan said, "This month is a blessing for all. We pray throughout the night to seek forgiveness and the entire month brings barkat (prosperity) in our doings, in our meals, in our professions and at our homes."
