50 people fall into river after footbridge collapses in Goa village, one dead

Goa: One person was killed and dozens others were reported missing after a foot bridge collapsed in Churchorem area of south Goa on Thursday evening. Till reports last came in, rescue operation were still underway. According to eyewitnesses, the rickety Sanvordem bridge gave away after 45-50 people had crowded on it to watch the fire brigade carry out a rescue operation of a man trying to commit suicide.

Though the rescue operations started immediately, one person was reported to have succumbed due to the impact of the bridge falling over him. The deceased was identified as Basavaraj Malvankar, 30 from Bazar wada, Sanguem.

 

"We are awaiting the details of the incident. People are unsure about how many people were on the bridge when the incident occurred. So far, we have fished out one body from the river," said South Goa MP Narendra Savaikar. The local administration requested the Indian Navy and Coast Guard to help with the rescue operations. "We have requested them to help the emergency services in the search and rescue operations," said Savaikar.

 

Officials said 10 people were rescued from the site and rushed to hospital in the first one hour of the tragedy, while 10 others reportedly swam ashore. The tragedy occurred around 7.30 in the evening when a fire brigade truck had reached the spot to rescue an individual who was trying to commit suicide.

 

"The bridge was quite old and often people were requested not to crowd around in a large numbers owing to its dilapidated state. Eyewitnesses said a huge crowd had gathered to watch the rescue operation of a person who was trying to commit suicide," said Swapnil Naik, the collector of south Goa.

 

DGP Mukhtesh Chander, who was at the spot to monitor the rescue operations, said . "We have called for a generator as the area has become pitch dark and rescue operations are getting affected."
